A Presence for the Overlooked: The Calling of Amina Young-Poon

Amina Young-Poon’s path to chaplaincy was shaped by grief, friendship, and the belief that simply being present can bring comfort and healing.

The year before she began chaplaincy training, her closest friend spent her final months in the hospital during COVID-19 restrictions. Visits were limited, and human touch was rare. Young-Poon watched as her friend connected with others through Facebook Live, often in tears when loved ones could not be physically present. Although her friend eventually passed away at home surrounded by family, Young-Poon realized that many people do not have that same support. That realization became her calling.

I want to be that family,” she says, “for those who don’t have a home to go to or whose families aren’t able to come to them.”

Her calling was also shaped by her time at the REACH Center for Urban Evangelism, where she and her friend first met. There, she learned to value genuine connection over measurable outcomes. She remembers visiting neighborhoods, praying with people, and offering encouragement even when there were no visible results.

I remember whispering to God, ‘help them see you,’” she recalls, praying that her eyes would reflect compassion and understanding.

Today, that prayer continues to guide her work. Young-Poon is committed to being present for those who are sick, isolated, or overlooked offering compassion, dignity, and hope.

With empathy and faith, Amina Young-Poon continues her calling, serving as a compassionate presence for those who need it most.

Grounded in faith, Amina remains committed to her ministry, serving others with purpose and compassion.

People who desire to make a lasting difference are encouraged to connect with TEAM, where leadership and service go hand in hand.
